Dalat Railway Station

Dalat not only surprises tourists by the beautiful landscape, comfortable weather but also by the imprint of French architectures on this land. One of the most unique French monuments to recommend is Dalat Railway Station.

History & Location

The history of the Dalat Railway dates back to 1932 when it was designed by two French architects, Moncet and Reveron, under the approval of Paul Doumer, the French Governor-General of Indochina from 1897 to 1902. The construction faced various challenges, particularly in the last stretch traversing the Lam Vien Plateau, but it was completed six years later. Unfortunately, the railway saw limited use following its abandonment during the Vietnam War due to widespread conflict. In 1991, a significant portion of the track, spanning 7 km between Dalat and Trai Mat, was reconstructed and opened for tourism.

Part of the French colonial vision to transform Dalat into a paradise in Indochina, the railway is situated at an elevation of 1,500 meters above sea level, with its station located at 1 Quang Trung St.

What To See

Recognized as one of the finest examples of colonial engineering and architecture in Vietnam, the station features an Art Deco style that harmonizes beautifully with local culture and characteristics. Its three high pointed roofs symbolize the three peaks of Lang Biang Mountain, and some locals suggest they resemble the communal houses of ethnic minorities in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, known as Nha Rong. Each roof contains colorful glass windows, and the central roof is adorned with a large clock that has been recently restored.

Another notable aspect of the Dalat Railway Station is its cog railway. The total railway length is 84 km from Dalat to Thap Cham station, which includes 16 km of cog railway designed by Swedish engineers. Due to the mountainous terrain, this cog railway system is essential for providing traction on steep slopes and for controlling speed on downhill stretches. The construction faced numerous geographical challenges, resulting in a lengthy completion period of 24 years.

Train Travel

Previously, two daily trains operated from Dalat to Nha Trang and from Dalat to Saigon, servicing three passenger compartments and one for goods. However, during the Vietnam War, the railway and station were heavily bombed and suffered significant damage. Following the fall of Saigon and the reunification of the country in 1975, the railways underwent repairs and resumed operation.

Since 1991, Dalat Railway Station has offered tourists a scenic 7 km ride to Trai Mat station, where they can experience the tranquil daily life of the locals, explore a vibrant market filled with fresh vegetables and fruits, and visit the charming Linh Phuoc Pagoda. The slow-paced train journey provides breathtaking views of Dalat as it winds through picturesque hills, complemented by the crisp air of the highlands. Although seating may not be overly comfortable, this train ride offers a unique nostalgic experience. The trip takes approximately 30 minutes and operates five times daily at 7:45 AM, 9:50 AM, 11:55 AM, 2:00 PM, and 4:05 PM. Ticket prices are VND 120,000 for foreigners and VND 80,000 for Vietnamese nationals.
