Ban Gioc
The largest natural waterfall in Southeast Asia
Located on the border with China, Ban Gioc is the largest natural waterfall in Southeast Asia. This magnificent waterfall spans 800 feet in width and features a series of cascading layers flowing into the Quay Son River below. At just 205 miles from Hanoi, travelers often enjoy the scenery by riding motorbikes through the picturesque routes of Bac Kan, Cao Bang, and Trung Khanh to Ban Gioc waterfall, then returning through Cao Bang, That Khe, and Lang Son back to Hanoi. For solo travelers, taking a sleeper bus to Cao Bang and then hiring a motorbike or continuing by bus to Ban Gioc is a great way to save energy. Booking a guided tour is also a convenient option for those seeking a less adventurous experience.

Ban Gioc is celebrated for its enchanting and harmonious beauty. Encircled by lush tropical forests and expansive rice paddies lining the riverbanks, it provides a stunning landscape. Riding a bamboo raft allows visitors to experience the falls up close, while a well-marked footpath leads into the jungle, offering a chance to explore different tiers of the waterfall during the dry season. For a breathtaking panoramic view, consider challenging yourself to a steep climb to Truc Lam Ban Gioc pagoda, located opposite the cascades.
Ban Gioc is stunning year-round, but the water is often clearest during the monsoon season (June to September), which is when it tends to attract larger crowds. Even towards the end of the dry season, visitors can still enjoy the majestic views as water released from the dam enhances the flow of the falls.
