On the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar year, a traditional festival is held at Bao Ha Temple in Lao Cai to honor the heroic deeds of Hoang Bay, the deity who defended the nation from foreign invaders.

Bao Ha Temple is situated at the base of Cam Hill, overlooking the alluvial Red River. Its stunning landscape has made it a popular destination for travelers and pilgrims over the years. According to local lore, at the end of the Le dynasty (from 1740 to 1786), the two wards known as Thuy Vi and Van Ban in Quy Hoa district were continually threatened by enemy attacks. To address this issue, the king dispatched General Nguyen Hoang Bay, known as the seventh general, to that region to ensure peace. Unfortunately, he passed away during a challenging battle. In his memory, the villagers erected the temple to honor and remember the benevolent general.

About the festival:

The festival typically begins early in the morning and consists of two main parts: worship and celebration. The village elder, usually the most revered person in the community, prays on behalf of all villagers, reminding them of the reasons they are able to enjoy a peaceful life today. During the worship ceremony, attendees make wishes for good health, prosperity, and good fortune for the year ahead. Children pray for academic success, while elders express hopes for a fruitful harvest. After the lengthy procession, gifts and food from participating families are shared with village members and visitors alike. The celebration then commences, featuring dance, song, traditional games, and an overall festive atmosphere as everyone relishes this annual occasion.

Although the festival may not be extravagant or luxurious, it embodies the deeply rooted traditions of a community in northeastern Vietnam. Thanks to recent renovations, both the temple and the festival have gained widespread popularity, attracting visitors from various regions across the country.
