Ben Nuoc Ceremony of the Ede Ethnic Group

One of the oldest traditions of the Ede ethnic group is the Ben Nuoc Ceremony. This significant event occurs annually after the harvest to express wishes for peaceful weather, abundant harvests, and prosperous living. It holds a deep spiritual meaning for the Ede people and serves as an occasion for the community to come together.

The Ben Nuoc Ceremony typically unfolds as a village festival. Following a long, harmonious performance of gongs that transports participants to a sacred spiritual realm, the ceremony commences with a worshiping ritual. Villagers pay homage to their ancestors, informing them of the presence of all family members. Subsequently, another round of gongs fills the air as the Yang (the sun) Ceremony begins. The final segment of the ceremony features young girls in traditional costumes who dance, sing, and parade from the center of the village to its gates.
