Ky Yen Festival in Ca Mau

The Ky Yen Festival remains a cherished cultural celebration in the Mekong River Delta, showcasing the unique traditions and spirit of this region. Held annually from the 15th to the 17th day of the lunar calendar, the festival takes place in every village across southern Vietnam.

Typically, each southern village features a temple dedicated to its local deity, which may be a revered hero or a character from local folklore. In more remote areas that lack a temple, residents often travel to neighboring villages to partake in the Ky Yen Festival.

The festivities kick off early on the 15th day with the Thinh Than Ceremony, a vibrant parade meant to invite the god back to the village. Participants prepare an array of delicious local specialties, including toasted pork, sticky rice wrapped in Cam Tim leaves, and white Hoi cakes, along with beautifully decorated palanquins filled with food, fruits, and other offerings. As the palanquins make their way through the streets, dragon dance teams perform spectacular routines, accompanied by traditional music that resonates throughout the area. Visitors are encouraged to join in this festive atmosphere, celebrating alongside locals until the ceremony concludes. Afterward, everyone can indulge in the delightful feast before attending the traditional Hat Boi singing contest. This lively competition runs from noon until evening and again from evening until midnight, with spectators eagerly gathering to cheer on talented singers. The stage remains surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd, even as night falls.

Once the three-day festival concludes, participants return to their daily routines, eagerly awaiting the next year's celebration that will once again rejuvenate their village and foster a deep sense of community.
