Vietnam National University (Hanoi) stands as the most expansive and influential university system in northern Vietnam, with a century-long tradition of delivering high-quality undergraduate education and advancing scientific research. The institution originated in 1906 as the University of Indochina (Université Indochinoise) under French colonial rule and adopted its current name in 1993 when several leading Hanoi universities merged.
As a national-level university, VNU-Hanoi encapsulates a diverse grouping of colleges spanning disciplines such as economics, engineering, sciences, education, humanities, and foreign languages. It serves as a dynamic hub for research, gathering top scholars, scientists, and experts across multiple fields.
The main administrative office continues to operate at Xuan Thuy Street in Cau Giay, though the university is in the final phase of relocating functions to its sprawling new campus in Hoa Lac to accommodate growth and modernize facilities.
Updates:
- In June 2025, VNU’s headquarters fully moved its administrative, academic, and research operations from Xuan Thuy to the Hoa Lac campus, which can now host roughly 15,000 students in a modern, integrated campus environment.
- VNU-Hanoi currently enrolls over 50,000 full-time students across its 10-member institutions and high schools.
- In 2025, admissions are opening for 2nd-degree and Work-Study programs under flexible modalities to accommodate learners’ needs.
- Academic assessment methods have been updated: the VNU-Hanoi aptitude test now includes interdisciplinary, problem-solving, and logical reasoning components aligned with the General Education curriculum.
