Hanoi Medical University (HMU) is the oldest university in Hanoi with a 123‑year history and remains the top medical school in northern Vietnam. It was founded in 1902 as the Indochina Medical College by French colonial authorities and headed by doctor Alexandre Yersin. Originally located on Le Thanh Tong Street, it later moved to Ton That Tung Street, named after one of Vietnam's most celebrated physicians.

The university's main mission is to train skilled doctors and healthcare professionals across various fields—from traditional medicine to nursing—and to conduct medical research and apply new technologies in domestic hospitals. Since 2007, HMU has also provided healthcare services through its own university hospital, Hanoi Medical University Hospital (HMUH).

HMU offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Public Health, Traditional Medicine, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology and other specializations. Its academic staff includes over 1,000 lecturers, including 32 professors and 76 associate professors, supported by 241 doctor-level researchers. The university is affiliated with several major hospitals, including Bach Mai, Viet Duc, National Pediatric, National Obstetrics & Gynecology, and National Tropical Disease hospitals.
