Ben Thanh Market

A bustling market in the daytime and a social center after sunset, Ben Thanh Market is absolutely a must-see attraction of the most dynamic city of Vietnam.

This vibrant and bustling market, located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City's lively downtown, attracts millions of tourists each year. Ben Thanh Market houses the city’s second-largest indoor wet market, following Cho Lon in District 5. Accessibility is easy, as the public transportation hub is conveniently situated right in front of the market.

History and Significance

Established in 1870 by the French, the market was initially named Les Halles Centrales but was renamed Ben Thanh in 1912. From its early beginnings as a wet market formed by street vendors in the 17th century, Ben Thanh has navigated through many changes and remains the oldest surviving market, symbolizing Ho Chi Minh City. This historical rich site is a must-visit for anyone traveling to this vibrant city.

Currently, due to its prime location in District 1 (at the intersection of Le Loi, Ham Nghi, Tran Hung Dao Avenues, and Le Lai Street), transportation is extremely convenient and the marketplace is always bustling with activity. In the mornings, visitors can find a diverse range of items, from dried food to clothing, often at reasonable prices. While the market can get quite lively and chaotic, this adds to the excitement of the overall experience. However, be aware that haggling is a necessary skill in any Vietnamese market.

Products Offered

Literally, everything imaginable can be found here. Ben Thanh Market features up to 1,500 stalls managed by around 6,000 vendors. The market primarily focuses on garments, including clothing, bags, shoes, souvenirs, and local cuisine.

The market is structured with four gates, each facing a different direction: South, North, East, and West.

The Southern gate leads to stalls offering garments and dried food, while fresh produce, including fruits, meats, and flowers, can be found near the Northern gate.

The Eastern gate is a paradise for cosmetics enthusiasts, where you can find a variety of body care and skincare products, whereas the Western gate hosts stalls selling footwear and various souvenirs.

Additionally, there is a large food court inside the market featuring delectable local Vietnamese dishes at reasonable prices. A bowl of pho typically costs around VND 70,000 (~USD 3), while a portion of traditional sweet dessert is priced at approximately VND 30,000 (~USD 1.25).
