The street was named after a significant uprising movement in the eighteenth century that successfully defeated Qing invaders during that time.

It is said that during the battle, so many enemy soldiers were killed that their bodies formed a mound known as Dong Da. Today, this site serves as a historical landmark along the street. In 1989, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da victory, Dong Da Cultural Park was established in the area of the mound to honor the legacy of King Quang Trung—the leader of this historic battle—while reminding future generations of their heritage and gratitude.

Today, the street has evolved into a vital thoroughfare, linking two bustling intersections: Nga Tu So and Tay Son-Thai Ha. At the Tay Ha intersection, you can find Parkson Plaza, a reputable shopping destination known for luxury goods in Hanoi.

The street is also home to two prominent educational institutions: Vietnam Trade Union University and Water Resources University, which continue to contribute to the community and shape the future of its students.
