Vietnam - China Border Crossings
The border areas between Vietnam and China continue to be vibrant hubs for shopping and exploration. As of 2025, there are three primary border crossings: Mong Cai (Vietnam) / Dong Hung (China), Dong Dang / Ping Xian, and Lao Cai / Hekou. All of these crossings are located in the northeast region of Vietnam. Travelers can easily reach Mong Cai from Quang Ninh Province or Halong City. Meanwhile, visitors from Sapa and Lao Cai can find the most efficient route to Kunming via the Lao Cai / Hekou border gate. For those departing from Lang Son heading into China, the Dong Dang / Ping Xian border gate is recommended. Conversely, crossing into Vietnam through Dong Dang allows for easy travel to Hanoi via various bus and train services.Photo: theconversation.com
Dong Dang - Ping Xian Border Gate
Among the several border gates between Vietnam and China, the Dong Dang international gate stands out as one of the most prominent and busiest, linking Lang Son in Vietnam with Ping Xian in China. It typically operates from early morning until at least 18:00, so it's advisable to plan your crossing accordingly.Photo: baotintuc.vn
Upon arriving at the Chinese side of the border, there is a facility where travelers must complete the immigration process. To enter Vietnam, it is essential to secure a Vietnamese visa prior to your arrival. The standard Tourist Visa is valid for 30 days, but durations may vary based on the issuing authority. If necessary, travelers can apply for an extension once in Vietnam. Visa fees differ significantly based on the applicant's home country, so it is wise to obtain one from a Vietnamese embassy or consulate if time allows.
Additionally, travelers should ensure they have sufficient Vietnamese currency upon entering the country, as there are no ATM machines located at the Dong Dang border gate. Upon arrival in Vietnam, it's recommended to visit the immigration office and acquire the necessary stamps before seeking transportation to Hanoi.
A trip to Hanoi typically costs around 100,000 VND (approximately $4.25 USD). Various modes of transportation are available, but a shared taxi is often a convenient option. There are numerous buses and trains operating from Dong Dang international gate. Once you reach Hanoi, about 40,000 VND (around $1.70 USD) should suffice to travel from the bus station to your accommodation.
