HCMC bustling with activities for New Year and Tet Holiday

It is less than two weeks left until the New Year, and about five weeks until Tet holiday. Ho Chi Minh City, the liveliest city in Vietnam is more bustling than any other time of the year, with a lot of activities to celebrate these special occasions.

As usual, main streets like Dong Khoi, Le Loi, Nguyen Hue and Le Duan are lit up with thousands of colorful lights, in a program titled “Shining welcome for New Year” lasting from December 26th, 2011 to February 3rd, 2012.

In the New Year’s Eve, there are spectacular fireworks in Thu Thiem area (District 2) and Dam Sen Park (District 11). In addition, an out door music show taking place at Nguyen Hue Street from 9pm to midnight on December 31th expected to add more excitement to the Eve.
 
To celebrate the Tet holiday, the city is going to host BanhTet (cylindrical glutinous rice cake) Festival from January 16th to 20th, 2012 (December 24th to December 28th on lunar calendar). 10,000 cakes will be made in BanhTet making competition. The completed products will be distributed to poor families and disadvantaged children in HCMC to help them enjoy a warm and joyful Tet. 
 
As planned, the much awaited annual event Nguyen Hue Flower Street is going back during the Tet Lunar New Year time from January 20th to 26th, 2012 (December 28th to January 4th on lunar calendar) with a number of grandiose flower installations displayed on Nguyen Hue Street. Besides, an outdoor music performance is taking place on the street from 9pm -12am on January 22nd, 2012 (December 29th on Lunar Calendar).

Meanwhile, fireworks, the most expected activity are scheduled to be shot in several areas around the city on the Tet’s Eve (January 23rd midnight) to welcome the Lunar New Year.
 
To facilitate the smooth running of activities for the New Year and Tet Holiday, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has announced a plan to halt traffic construction works and repair of roads and drainage systems during the periods December 31th – January 1st, and January 8th – 30th, 2012.
