A project to turn Hoi An into an ecological city

On 16th August, 2011, a conference about the project turning Hoi An into an ecological city took place in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province.
Hoi An authority in collaboration with The United Nations and The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) held this conference to draw attention of many Vietnamese and foreign experts and managers to the sustainable development of this popular tourist destination. The discussion focused on the main theme of environmental management policies in Hoi An and potentials of traditional handicrafts in Hoi An- My Son. Valuable experiences and novel ideas were put forward for debate.
According to Patrick J. Gilabert, the representative of UNIDO in Vietnam, this project aims to support Vietnamese Government in the process of amending and ratifying environmental management policies based on green industry ideas, certainly contributing to the decrease in greenhouse effect, waste disposal and the negative impact of climate change.
The project is bound to encourage green industrial activities at small and medium-sized enterprises, especially those operating in tourism, handicrafts, and the relevant fields. In parallel, the provision of sustainable energy and environmental services is sure to get enhanced.
It is certain that outcomes and experiences of the project should be taken into consideration by other cities and provinces in Vietnam on their road to build up their green hometown.
