Weather Overview
As we step into October, we embrace the charm of autumn in Vietnam. The mild weather, clear skies, and crisp air herald the arrival of various flowers blooming across the country. Each region boasts its own unique floral display, painting the landscape in vibrant colors. While the summer months are typically ideal for beach escapades, October is often celebrated as a season of romance.
Temperature and Humidity
In October, northern Vietnam experiences an average temperature of around 25°C during the day, with nighttime temperatures possibly dipping below 20°C. If you're considering a camping trip in the mountains or an evening culinary tour in the major cities, it's wise to pack a cardigan or light jacket. Rain can occur in higher altitudes but tends to be brief.
In central Vietnam, the weather remains unpredictable due to the convergence of cold air and tropical moisture in the East Sea. Expect heavy rains or storms early in the month, which can lead to flooding in some lowland areas.
On the other hand, the Central Highlands enjoy plenty of sunshine, largely shielded from tropical downpours. However, checking the weather forecast before planning your trip is advisable.
If you're keen to dodge the rain entirely, head south, where the dry and sunny season sets in. Do remember that this also means higher UV levels, so prepare with sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats to enjoy your beach getaway comfortably.
Regions | Temperature | Humidity | Rainfall | Rain Days |

Hanoi Liberation Day
October 10th marks a significant anniversary in Hanoi, commemorating both the year 1010 when King Ly Thai To moved the capital from Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh) to Thang Long, now known as Hanoi, as well as the city’s liberation from French colonial rule. On this day, Hanoi remains vibrant with cultural events and outdoor performances taking place in popular venues such as Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square, Ba Dinh Square, and Ly Thai To Square.
Keo Pagoda Festival - Nam Dinh and Thai Binh
The Keo Pagodas, located in the provinces of Nam Dinh and Thai Binh, are among Vietnam’s oldest religious structures with a history spanning over 400 years. Annually, during the full moon of the 9th lunar month (usually in mid-October), the pagodas host a festival to honor Buddha and celebrate the birth of monk Khong Lo, known for healing rare diseases of King Ly Nhan Tong. The festival features cultural activities, including dragon dances, boat races, and swimming competitions on the Red River, alongside spiritual rituals.
Kin Lau Khau Mau Festival - Lai Chau
This festive occasion is an important event for the Thai ethnic community in Lai Chau, held on the 15th day of the 9th lunar month. Following traditional rituals, attendees partake in performances involving gongs, Xoe and Sap dances, as well as culinary delights such as Khau Mau (new green rice), Khau Nua (sticky rice), smoked beef (Chin Giang), and grilled fish (Pa Binh) accompanied by local straw wine.
Kate Festival - Ninh Thuan
The largest festival for the Cham ethnic group occurs in early October across various locations, including the Po Ina Nagar Temple in Ninh Phuoc and the Po Klaong Garay tower in Phan Rang. During the Kate festival, the Cham people pay tribute to their gods, heroes, and ancestors with ceremonial music from Saranai trumpets and Ginang drums, complemented by traditional dances performed by women in vibrant attire.

In late October, Hanoi transforms as streets are adorned with blooming white daisies. As you stroll through the Old Quarter or West Lake regions, expect to encounter vendors selling these charming flowers, illuminating the city with their elegance and creating a poetic, romantic vibe amidst the golden autumn.

Side Trips to Binh Lieu or Moc Chau
A trek along the Dinosaur Spine in Binh Lieu, Quang Ninh offers breathtaking views of white reed fields lining the route. As you climb towards the peak, this picturesque journey provides a welcome escape from the ordinary. Remember to dress warmly, as it can be windy and drizzly at higher elevations in October.
Moc Chau is another excellent destination in the northern highlands, exhibiting a cool climate with mist and expansive canola flower fields bursting into bloom. Venture into surrounding villages like Ang, Ba Phach, and Ngu Dong On to experience local mountain life and indulge in stunning natural scenery.
As you travel further north to Ha Giang, the striking Tam Giac Mach (buckwheat flower) begins to bloom, draping the hills in white and light purple. Temperatures can vary greatly between day and night (10-15 degrees difference); bringing a jacket or raincoat is essential for unpredictable weather. This period is perfect for immersing in highland culture, visiting local markets, and enjoying traditional dishes like Tam Giac Mach cake, Thang Co, and corn wine.
Experience the Golden Fields of the Central Highlands
Gia Lai, situated in Central Vietnam, is a must-visit in October as it emerges from the rainy season. The weather during this time is conducive for leisurely explorations of the golden shower tree flowers. Early mornings provide the best light to witness the spectacular bloom against the backdrop of fog-laden landscapes.
Like Da Lat, Gia Lai showcases wild sunflowers. However, this region offers a tranquil experience, allowing visitors to soak in the serenity by the majestic K50 waterfall, visit Ocean Lake, and pray at Minh Thanh pagoda without the usual crowds.
Enjoy the Clear Waters of the South
While central beaches enter the rainy season, Phu Quoc enjoys its prime season in October, showcasing clearer skies, calmer emerald waters, and mild temperatures ranging between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius.
With fewer tourists, accommodations and services become more affordable, making this an ideal time for water sports like scuba diving and snorkeling or visiting attractions such as Vinpearl Land and Vinpearl Safari. Remember to sample Phu Quoc's local specialties, including tram mushrooms, sea cucumbers, king crabs, and sim wine.
The Nguyen Trung Truc temple festival in Ganh Dau, about 40 km from Duong Dong town center, enhances the festive atmosphere, with celebrations beginning in the latter half of the 8th lunar month and continuing into October.
For those extending their journey southward, Dong Thap province is a delightful option. Water lily blooms across the canals create stunning scenery. Glide gently on small boats through the blooming lilies, inhaling their delicate fragrance as you enjoy the peace of the early morning. Consider embarking on a boat trip to floating markets for an authentic glimpse into the lives of river-dwelling communities.
