MIT History timeline

May 1951, the Ministry of Industry and Trade was established, formerly the Ministry of Domestic Trade.

October 1995, the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the Ministry of Energy, and the Ministry of Light Industries were unified, leading to the establishment of the Ministry of Industries.

July 2007, the Ministry of Industries and Ministry of Trade were merged into the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade, as a government agency, undertakes the state management of industry and trade. Branches and fields under the supervision of the MIT include: mechanical engineering, electricity, metallurgy, renewable energy, new energy, chemicals, oil and gas, industrial explosives, mining and mineral processing industries, consumer industry, food industry and other processing industries, and domestic goods circulation; import and export, market management trade promotion, e-commerce, trade services, international economic-trade integration, competition management, monopoly control, application of safeguard, anti-dumping and anti-subsidy measures and measures to protect consumer interests. Also, the MIT takes up the state management of public services in the branches and fields as mentioned above. (Source: Decree No. 189/2007/ND-CP, Article 1). Particularly, there are many state-level departments within the Ministry that are directly responsible for the above mentioned functions, namely Planning Department, International Cooperation Department, Heavy Industry Department, Light Industry Department, Export-Import Department, Domestic Market Department, Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam, Vietnam Competition Administration Department, Industrial Safety Techniques and Environment Agency, Vietnam E-Commerce and Information Technology Agency, Vietnam Chemicals Agency and Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency.
