Ho Chi Minh city planning first pedestrian-friendly streets

At the recent Ho Chi Minh city's Department of Urban Planning and Architecture meeting, officials have proposed a daring plan to turn some of the city's busiest corners into pedestrians' heavens. The first such heaven is rather a small one.

The area that connects Bui Vien, Tran Hung Dao and the famous "foreigners' avenue" Pham Ngu Lao will first begin a trial period. The proposal calls for closing off the area at night from Friday to Sunday. If the plan succeeds in creating a habit for the locals, then second phase will soon begin and motorized vehicles will be banned from these streets for good.

The second area that can probably see transformation is one of Ben Thanh market and the surrounding proximity, which is already known for its vibrant nightlife. The last, and biggest one, will lie encompassed by Le Loi, Ton Duc Thang, Nguyen Hue and Ham Nghi. Besides the rhythm of youthful Ho Chi Minh city's clubs, the walking streets, mirroring after the immense success of the first one in Hanoi, will also feature street stalls for vendors to sell indigenous products to tourists.

There is concern for the possible outcome of the project as well, as these areas boast some of the busiest avenues of the city. And unlike Hanoi's walking street, which has narrow old streets and is well accustomed to the trade, turning Ho Chi Minh's huge drives into pedestrian-only walkways may not be feasible. Officials give no word on the exact date of opening for each of the three. The project receives assistance and funding from the Spanish government.
