To mark one year since the terrible earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters, Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam is holding free Japanese movie screening at National Cinema Center in Hanoi, from March 16th to 17th, 2012.

The event features four films, inspired by various natural disasters in Japan, and locals who bravely struggled against them. All have Vietnamese and English sub-titles.

“Quartet”, a new film released this year tells us story of a music-loving family in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Urayasu City, where is affected by soil liquefactions after the historic 2012 earthquake.

“Fukushima Hula Girls” (2011) is a documentary film depicting the struggle of “Hula girls” at the Spa Resort Hawaiians where four disasters including an earthquake, a tsunami, a nuclear accident and harmful gossip and rumors struck.

“WANKO” (2011), on the other hand, tells true life stories of a family and a dog living in the small island Miyakejima, where an active volcano exists.

“Haru’s Journey” (2011) is made in Miyagi Prefecture, the place directly affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Though being made before the March 11th disaster, the problems of the elderly depicted in the film raised a question about how these people might be affected by such a disaster.

The movies are screened at National Cinema Center, No. 87 Lang Ha Street.

Free tickets are available at Japan Foundation, 27 Quang Trung Street.
