Dong Nai biosphere reserve recognized worldwide
On May 19, a ceremony to officially announce Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve to become global biosphere reserve was held in Dong Nai Province with participation of Dong Nai Provincial People’s Committee and UNESCO.
On May 19, a ceremony to officially announce Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve to become global biosphere reserve was held in Dong Nai Province with participation of Dong Nai Provincial People’s Committee and UNESCO. That marks this forest as the 580th biosphere reserve in the world, and 8th in Vietnam.
This recognition is considered crucial to global biology as this reserve is a giant living laboratory where thousands kinds of animal and plants are living, including those nearly extinct. This also demonstrates the diversity of Vietnam nature, as well as high biological properties of the S-shaped country.
However, this also put heavier responsibility on local authorities and communities to protect the environment at this biosphere reserve.
Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve stretches on a large area of more than 966,500ha in 5 provinces including Dong Nai, Lam Dong, Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong and Dak Nong. This is living area of more than 1,400 species of tree and 1,700 types of animals, consisting of various Red Book-listed creatures.
